1. Electrical Survey: MCC

This image shows loose connections on the load side of a contactor (B and C Phases), and loose connections on the terminal block (B and C Phases).

clips was recommended as well as the replacement of any required components.

2. Typical Fault Conduction Pattern

This is a typical conduction pattern, showing a thermal tapering along the coated electrical cable from the electrical connection. The connection, likely the source of the fault, does not appear to be as hot because of the emissivity differences between materials. Phase A is under a load of 67.8A, compared to 70.8A and 70.4A for B and C respectively. There is a 30° C temperature rise between phases. This is definitely a critical fault that requires immediate attention.

3. Contactor

All three phases are under a load of approximately 61A. There is a very critical temperature rise across the phases of at least 45° C. This temperature measurement is conservative, since it is an indirect temperature. The source of the resistance is likely the electrical contact inside the plastic housing on the A phase.

4. Fuse Disconnect

All phases are under a load of 32A. Between the B and C phases, there is a temperature rise of at least 11° C. There are a lot of apparent temperature differences, such as the cooler reflections off of the shiny surfaces, which have to be disregarded.

5. UPS Inverter

Both sides of this UPS inverter are under a load of approximately 120A. There is, however, a 25° C temperature rise on the neutral side. The temperature measurements were performed on the cable insulation rather than the shiny connections, since the shinier surfaces mostly reflect cooler, background temperatures.

6. Rectifier Cabinet

The two wires in this rectifier are under a load of 5A - 6A. The left wire, which appears cooler, is actually under slightly greater load. There is, however, a temperature rise of approximately 11° C between the two. The temperatures were taken from the wire insulation, not from the shiny connections, in order to eliminate errors due to background reflections.

7. Connection on Manufacturing Control Panel

This image shows a small electrical connection that was loose and subject to wide load fluctuations under normal operating conditions.

Electrical Applications

Thermography is a non-contact temperature measurement technique. It's ability to measure temperature in a non-intrusive manner make's it one of the best tool's available to the electrical industry today. Typical candidates for an infrared electrical survey include overhead transmission lines, substations, transformers, thyristor banks, circuit operating devices, switches, fuses, circuit breakers, control equipment, motors and motor control centres

temperature signature more pronounced. This electrical equipment was connected to a compressor that was critical to the operation of the entire manufacturing line at this strandboard facility.

1. 240 KVA Transformer

This image shows approximately half of the North side cooling fins/tubes to be exceptionally cool, indicating possible plugged tubes (right-hand side of image). The image is from an East elevation showing both sides of the transformer.

2. Substation

The outdoor electrical equipment providing power to your facilities are often overlooked or ignored during surveys performed by inexperienced technicians. Maverick's standard electrical surveying practice is to inspect these support systems while on site to ensure their continued dependibility. This image shows a loose pot head connection on the center phase at a substation. Unattended, this problem could lead to a loss of power or fire.

3. Vault Connections

Hot connections in underground distribution vaults are readily apparent with infrared technology. Fortunately, enviromental factors are usually not an issue, although one must be careful that the sun is not shining on components from doors or grating. The load on the line, the rating of the component, and the temperature rise must all be taken into account when determining the criticality of the fault.

4. Heat Trace Transformer

All four cells are under a load of 81A - 84A. However, there is a 31V drop in output from circuit A to circuit B, likely due to the failure of cell 1 (far right). This is an example of a "hot spot" being the symptom while a cool area is the actual problem.

5. Transformer Oil Level

The oil level in this transformer (see the black line) is detectable, however the temperature differences are less than 1° C, so fine adjustments of the level and span are necessary. The areas of solid white in the image are due to the sun shining on the open door and building wall.

6. Transformer Fins

This image shows a portion of the cooling fins on a chemical facility power substation transformer. The fins appear to have poor oil circulation, probably due to pluggage or a low oil level.

7. Gantry Crane Bus

This is a connection on the bus bars for a trolley house on a large gantry crane. Under partial load, the poor connection is apparent as heat transfers through the plastic covering.

Mechanical Applications

Mechanical applications for thermal imaging almost always involve rotating equipment. Excessive heat is generated by friction caused by faulty bearings, inadequate lubrication, misalignment, imbalance, misuse, or normal wear. We can combine thermography with other methods to provide a complete analysis of mechanical condition. The temperature of motors gearboxes or just about any mechanical equipment can be monitored over time and historical data can then be trended.

Commercial and Industrial Fire Extinguishers

One of the most cost effective and most efficient items of safety equipment your facility needs to have is high quality fire extinguishers. At Reliable Fire Equipment we offer only the finest of hand portable and wheeled fire extinguishers from Ansul Fire Protection. When fire strikes in your facility, it is to late to plan for the emergency. Only with preparedness and a sound safety program will your company be ready in the event of a possible disaster.

The Effectiveness of Portable Fire Extinguishers

A survey prepared by the National Association of Fire Equipment Distributors recently revealed that hand operated portables extinguished over 90% of the fire incidents in commercial facilities. In most cases the fire was completely extinguished before fire department personnel arrived on the scene. And they can put out fires before the sprinkler system activates, and sprays water all over your furniture and carpets.

Alarm Monitoring for Commercial and Industrial Firms

Alarm system monitoring reports a security or fire alarm to a remotely located UL listed central station.

In most buildings the greatest risk of loss occurs when the facility is unoccupied. If there is a fire alarm, or a security alarm, and there is nobody on scene to respond to the problem, big problems can result. The fire spreads and does irretrievable damage; intruders steal thousands of dollars worth of property, or commit vandalism in the process. This is where ul alarm monitoring provides the extra measure of security to protect your assets.

How UL Alarm Monitoring Works with Central Stations

Security systems and fire alarm systems are usually connected to a digital telephone dialer. When an alarm occurs, the alarm system signals the digital telephone dialer to dial a preselected telephone number and transmit a code identifying the property and the nature of the alarm. The dialer calls an Underwriter's Laboratories listed central station monitoring facility. Sometimes this is referred to as a ul listed central station. A central station is 'central' because many different locations may report to a central point. The whole process is often called ul alarm monitoring because the central station is listed by Underwriter's Laboratories as an installation complying with a set of standards for safety and security.

FM200

Western States Fire Protection installs FM200 Fire Suppression Systems.

Developed as a Halon replacement, FM200 is the best people-compatible, clean agent fire protection for vital facilities. It extinguishes fire via a combination of chemically-based fire inhibition and cooling. It is environmentally acceptable, safe to use with sensitive equipment, fast acting, efficient and effective.

Often times FM200 systems are employed to protect critical installations formerly protected by Halon 1301. Western States Fire Protection installs FM200 in the following types of facilities:

o Telecommunication Facilities

o Facilities where water damage must be avoided at all costs

FM200 is the preferred fire suppression system for facilities that can't afford fire related business interruption. It is non-toxic on people.
The FM200 extinguishing agent is typically stored in cylinders or spheres. It is delivered to nozzles through a system piping network. Smoke detectors sense the presence of fire in the protected facility. The detection and control panel then sounds an alarm, shuts down air handlers, disconnects power from the protected equipment, and then releases agent into the protected area.

History of FM200

Because of the Montreal Protocol, ozone-depleting substances, such as Halon 1301, are no longer used in new fire suppression systems. Governments around the world have already mandated the decommissioning of Halon 1301 systems. FM200 is a reliable, effective, clean agent that won't harm the environment.
In the 1980's FM200 was developed to fill the void left by the phase-out of Halon 1301. FM200 was chosen over other extinguishing compounds because it offers the advantage of rapid extinguishment, it is very safe and environmentally friendly. The United States EPA, Environmental Protection Agency, considers FM200 the most effective HFC alternative to Halon 1301.
FM200 has been subjected to exhaustive testing, evaluation and review by organizations worldwide to evaluate it's effectiveness, safety threshold, and environmental characteristics.

What is FM200?

FM200 is a brand name for 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptaflouropropane. It is also known as HFC-227ea. It belongs to a class of compounds known as hydroflouocarbons (HFCs). HFCs are composed of carbon, fluorine and hydrogen atoms. HFCs are often times confused with hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). HCFCs are a different class of compounds containing chlorine. HCFCs deplete ozone and are subject to being phased out. HFCs such as FM200 do not deplete ozone and are not subject to being phased out.
FM200 extinguishes fire through heat absorption. The class of compound FM200 belongs to, HFCs, are used in refrigeration and are a very effective heat transfer agent. HFCs remove heat energy from a fire so the fire cannot sustain itself. FM200 also releases small amounts of free radicals upon exposure to flames. Free radicals inhibit the chain reaction responsible for combustion.
FM200 will not damage delicate equipment because it does not have particulates or oily residues. It does not significantly reduce oxygen levels when deployed, making it safe for people. After being discharged it can be removed by ventilation.

Benefits of Using FM200

o Fast-Acting
FM200 can stop fires in just seconds. Extinguishing fires quickly means less damage, repair costs and extra safety.
o Safe For People
FM200 has been tested extensively to ensure safe exposure to people.
o No Collateral Damage
FM200 does not leave oily residues, particulates, water, or corrosive material. This eliminates collateral damage to delicate equipment.
o Environmentally Responsible
FM200 has a low environmental impact because it has a low atmospheric lifetime. It also has zero potential to deplete the ozone layer.
o Small Space Requirement
Other fire suppression systems, such as C02 and inert gases require as much as seven times more storage space.
o Globally Accepted
FM200 is the most widely accepted clean agent in the world. It is used in tens of thousands of fire suppression systems.
